Biollante (ビオランテ, Biorante) is a fictional monster appearing in ''Godzilla vs. Biollante'' (1989). She is a massive plant-animal hybrid created by Japanese geneticist Dr. Shiragami, who fused the DNA and spiritual essence of his deceased daughter Erika with Godzilla cells and a rose plant in an attempt to preserve her soul. The result is one of the most biologically unique and emotionally resonant monsters in the Godzilla franchise—a creature that is simultaneously a weapon of science, a vessel of grief, and a living bridge between human and kaiju.

Biollante appears in two distinct forms across the film. In her first form she resembles a colossal, luminescent rose anchored to a lake bed, with long vine-like tendrils, a central flower blossom, and a faintly humanoid quality that reflects Erika's presence within her. This form is serene but powerful, and Godzilla is able to destroy it with his atomic breath, causing Biollante to dissolve into golden spores that drift skyward. In her second, fully evolved form Biollante is vastly larger—a terrifying flower-beast with enormous thrashing vines, multiple crocodilian jaws lined with teeth, acidic sap, and Erika's face faintly visible within her glowing core. This form battles Godzilla ferociously before again dissolving into spores and ascending into space, suggesting that Erika's soul has finally transcended.

Biollante is notable for being the first original monster introduced in the Heisei series that was not a returning Showa-era character. Her origin came from a fan contest held by Toho, with the winning design submitted by a dentist named Shinichiro Kobayashi. She is widely regarded by fans as one of the most creative and visually striking monsters in Toho's catalog, and her singular appearance in one film only adds to her mystique.
