Hāfu Diaspora
A list of all the various mixes with Japanese that make up the hāfu diaspora.

We use flag emojis to categorize the ethnicity of each person or character in JapanWiki. There are a couple basic conventions.

1. For hāfu, or biracial, half Japanese, we lead with the Japanese flag, and then pair that flag with the second named country or ethnicity. For example, a Japanese American would be categorized with 🇯🇵🇺🇸 Generally, this is usually when the hāfu is born in America, with the second parent being non-Japanese of unknown ancestry. We lead with the Japanese flag as per the phrase "Japanese American". If the American parent is of a single known background nationality, then we can use that countries flag second, for example if the non-Japanese parent is known to be German, we can categorize them as 🇯🇵🇩🇪. However, by default, if ther is any ambiquity, or the non-Japanese parent is of multiple nationalities, then Japanese American is fine.

2. If the person or character is full blooded Japanese, not hāfu, and born in American we use the category 🇺🇸🇯🇵. This can be read as American born Japanese, or in other words Nikkei (日系人). The same convention can be used in other countries.

3. If we know that a person or character is half Japanese, but we don't know the second country or ethnicity, then we use the category 🇯🇵?

4. Japanese citizens are labels with a single Japanese flag as 🇯🇵

5. There are two more categories which are similar. Firstly, "Quapa" is when we know that the person or character is a quarter, or 25% Japanese. If one of their grandparents is Japanese, we categorize them as Quapa. Secondly, if we know that someone is the child of one parent who is 75% Japanese, then we categorize them as 37.5% Japanese
