__NOTOC__ Godzilla: Final Wars (ゴジラ FINAL WARS, Gojira: Fainaru Wōzu) is a 2004 Japanese kaiju film directed by Ryūhei Kitamura and produced by Toho Pictures. Released in Japanese theaters on December 4, 2004, it marks the 50th anniversary of the Godzilla franchise and stands as the 28th mainline entry in the series, as well as the final film in the Millennium era. The film was the last Godzilla production for a decade, until Shin Godzilla in 2016. === Production and Style === Directed by action filmmaker Ryūhei Kitamura, known for his kinetic, style-driven approach, Godzilla: Final Wars was conceived as a grand, maximalist send-off to the Showa and Millennium-era franchise. The film deliberately channels 1970s tokusatsu energy while incorporating wire-fu martial arts, science fiction action, and references to classic Toho kaiju films spanning five decades. Special effects were handled by Eiichi Asada. The screenplay was written by Wataru Mimura and Isao Kiriyama. === Plot === Over the course of the 20th century, environmental disasters trigger the emergence of giant monsters across the globe. Humanity responds by forming the Earth Defense Force (EDF), which recruits genetically enhanced humans called mutants to fight alongside conventional forces. The most powerful of all monsters, Godzilla, is eventually lured to Antarctica and imprisoned beneath the ice following a battle with the EDF warship Gotengo. Decades later, in 2004, a mysterious alien race known as the Xiliens arrive on Earth, claiming to have banished the world's monsters as a gesture of goodwill. They warn of an approaching rogue star called Gorath. However, EDF mutant Shinichi Ozaki and U.N. biologist Dr. Miyuki Otonashi uncover the truth: the Xiliens have been secretly controlling humanity and plan a full invasion. When their deception is exposed, the Xiliens release their army of mind-controlled monsters on cities worldwide. With no other option, EDF Captain Douglas Gordon convinces his crew to travel to Antarctica and free Godzilla — the one monster immune to Xilien control. Released from his icy prison, Godzilla cuts a path across the globe, defeating monster after monster in rapid succession: Zilla in Sydney, Kumonga in New Guinea, Kamacuras in Manazuru, and Ebirah and Hedorah in Tokyo Bay. Reaching the Xilien mothership, Godzilla faces Monster X, who ultimately reveals itself as the three-headed Keizer Ghidorah. With Ozaki transferring his Keizer energy to Godzilla, the King of the Monsters destroys Keizer Ghidorah and the Xilien threat is ended. Godzilla and his son Minilla return peacefully to the sea. === Cast === * Masahiro Matsuoka as Shinichi Ozaki * Rei Kikukawa as Dr. Miyuki Otonashi * Don Frye as Captain Douglas Gordon * Maki Mizuno as Anna Otonashi * Kazuki Kitamura as the Xilien Controller * Kane Kosugi as Katsunori Kazama * Akira Takarada as U.N. Secretary-General Naotaro Daigo * Kumi Mizuno and Kenji Sahara in supporting roles === Kaiju Roster === The film features the largest number of monsters in any single Godzilla film, including: Godzilla, Ebirah, Hedorah, Monster X / Keizer Ghidorah, Gigan, Mothra, Minilla, Rodan, Anguirus, King Caesar, Zilla, Kumonga, Kamacuras, and Manda. === Reception === The film holds a 6.3/10 on IMDb and a cult following among kaiju fans for its relentless pace and fan-service monster roster. It was criticized by some for its breakneck editing and tonal inconsistency, but celebrated for the sheer spectacle of Godzilla's global monster-bashing spree. It remains one of the most internationally recognized entries in the Millennium series.
