Godzilla vs. Biollante (ゴジラVSビオランテ, Gojira tai Biorante) is a 1989 Japanese kaiju film directed by Kazuki Ohmori and produced by Toho. It is the second film in the Heisei series and a direct sequel to ''The Return of Godzilla'' (1984). The film stands apart from most of the Heisei run for its unusually grounded, science-driven story, exploring genetic engineering, grief, and the ethics of weaponizing Godzilla's cells. Biollante herself—a massive plant-animal hybrid created from Godzilla's DNA fused with that of a rose and a human soul—remains one of the most unique and emotionally resonant monster designs in the entire franchise.

Following Godzilla's defeat and containment at the end of ''The Return of Godzilla'', several factions are competing to obtain cells scraped from Godzilla's body during his rampage. A Japanese government scientist named Dr. Shiragami, still mourning the death of his daughter Erika—killed in a bombing—has fused Erika's soul and DNA into a rose to keep her spirit alive. When Godzilla's cells are later added to the rose by Shiragami in hopes of granting it resilience, the plant rapidly mutates into a massive creature: Biollante. The creature grows in a lake near Mt. Aso, glowing and calling out in a way Miki Saegusa—the series' resident psychic—senses is an echo of both Erika and Godzilla. Meanwhile, a bio-weapons division called Bio-Major and a rogue Middle Eastern nation are both attempting to steal the cells, and the JSDF is developing a biological weapon called Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria (ANEB) designed to neutralize Godzilla from within.

Godzilla is awakened from Mt. Mihara by a bomb planted by Bio-Major operatives and makes landfall. He encounters Biollante at Lake Aso and the two battle, with Godzilla burning Biollante with his atomic breath. Biollante dissolves into glowing spores that drift into the sky. The JSDF successfully injects Godzilla with the ANEB using specially designed missiles, but the bacteria require high body temperatures to activate and Godzilla retreats to the sea before the effect fully takes hold. He later reemerges and a second battle begins—this time Biollante returns in a far larger, more terrifying form: a colossal flower-beast with enormous vines, tooth-lined maws, and Erika's face dimly visible within her core. The battle is brutal and prolonged, with Biollante landing devastating blows, but Godzilla eventually overcomes her again. As the ANEB begins to weaken him, Godzilla retreats into the sea. Biollante once more dissolves into golden spores and ascends into space, leaving behind the suggestion that Erika's soul has finally found peace. The ANEB cells extracted from Godzilla after the battle carry forward into the next film, setting up the genetic thread that runs through the rest of the Heisei series.
