__NOTOC__ Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (ゴジラVSキングギドラ, Gojira tai Kingu Gidora) is a 1991 Japanese kaiju film directed by Kazuki Ohmori and produced by Toho. It is the third film in the Heisei series and the first Heisei-era appearance of King Ghidorah, radically reimagined from his Showa origins as a monster manipulated by time-traveling antagonists rather than an alien invader acting on his own. The film is one of the most plot-dense entries in the entire Godzilla franchise, incorporating time travel, Cold War-era revisionism, anti-American subtext, and questions about Japan's economic rise and national identity into its kaiju narrative. In 1992, a UFO lands in Japan carrying a group of visitors from the 23rd century who call themselves the Futurians. They claim to have traveled back in time to warn Japan that Godzilla will soon destroy the country and must be prevented from ever existing. They propose traveling back to 1944 to remove the Godzillasaurus—the dinosaur that will eventually become Godzilla—from Lagos Island before nuclear testing transforms it. A team including novelist Kenichiro Terasawa, psychic Miki Saegusa, and android M11 travels back to 1944 and successfully relocates the Godzillasaurus to the Bering Sea. However, the Futurians secretly leave behind three genetically engineered creatures called Dorats, which are irradiated by a later nuclear test and merge into King Ghidorah. The Futurians use King Ghidorah to terrorize Japan in order to destroy it as an economic superpower before it comes to dominate the world in their era. It is soon revealed that removing the Godzillasaurus did not eliminate Godzilla—a nuclear submarine sank in the Bering Sea and irradiated the creature anyway, creating an even larger and more powerful Godzilla than before. Meanwhile, Japanese businessman Yasuaki Shindo, who fought on Lagos Island in 1944 and was saved by the Godzillasaurus, finances the creation of a nuclear-powered submarine to deliberately irradiate and awaken Godzilla, seeing him as Japan's only hope against King Ghidorah. Godzilla resurfaces, now at 100 meters tall, and defeats King Ghidorah in a decisive battle, destroying the three-headed monster and sending his body to the bottom of the sea. The Futurians' plan collapses, and their ship is destroyed. In the film's coda, a young woman from the future—revealed to be an android as well—recovers King Ghidorah's remains from the ocean floor and uses future technology to resurrect him as Mecha-King Ghidorah, an armored cyborg, in a last-ditch effort to stop Godzilla. The gambit temporarily succeeds in subduing Godzilla and dropping him into the sea, but Mecha-King Ghidorah is destroyed in the process.
