The Shaggy Men were highly evolved lizards created by a scientist loyal to Imperial Japan during World War II. Using an evolutionary machine on his artificial island off the coast of Australia, the scientist accelerated the evolution of ordinary lizards into ape-like humanoids. He implanted control discs in their necks to enslave them and used them as soldiers in his planned invasion of Australia. When reporters Jack Casey, Jeff Mace, and Mary Morgan crash-landed near the island, they were captured by the Shaggy Men. The scientist ordered their experimentation, but Mace escaped and, as the costumed Patriot, fought back. He defeated the Japanese scientist, devolving him into a lizard, and used the machine to reverse the mutation of the Shaggy Men. The reversion proved fatal, as the stress caused their heads to explode. The machine was destroyed soon after. Whether any Shaggy Men survived remains unknown. * Name: Shaggy Men * Also Known As: Ape Men * Type: Artificially evolved humanoid race * Affiliation: Imperial Japan * Creator: Al Fagaly * Base of Operations: Artificial island off the coast of Australia * Enemies: The Patriot (Jeff Mace) * Universe: Earth-616 (Marvel Multiverse) * Publisher: Timely/Marvel Comics * First Appearance: Marvel Mystery Comics #34 (June 1942) * Total Appearances: 1 Shaggy Men on Fandom.com
