Surge[edit]
Surge is a young mutant with electricity-based powers, and presently requires gauntlet-like regulators to fully control her powers. Considered to be one of the natural leaders of the younger mutants, she now resides at the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.
Noriko Ashida (芦田 則子 Ashida Noriko) was born in Tokyo, Japan, where her family Seiji (father0, Suki (mother) and Keitaro (little brother) still live. (New X-Men Vol 2 #7 (January, 2005)).
She was close to her brother, Keitaro (芦田 景太郎 Ashida Keitarō), but she ran away from home when she was thirteen-years-old after her powers manifested; she claimed that her father "doesn't believe in mutants." How she came to the United States of America is unknown, but she was living homeless on the streets of New York City when, four years later, she went up to the Xavier Institute gates - only to be turned away by student Julian Keller (Hellion) for being homeless. Later, she had a serious power discharge harming a Grindstone Cafe waitress in the process.
Led by Elixir, he gathered the group to search for her that night. They saw her buying drugs which they thought was causing the problems with her powers. Sofia blew them away, but it turned out that without the drugs, her powers were out of control. With Laurie's pheromone emotion-manipulating powers, they subdued her and took her home.
Beast then designed special metallic gauntlets that could regulate and control her ability to absorb ambient electrical energy preventing further overloads.
- Surge was created by Nunzio DeFilippis, Christina Weir and Keron Grant and first appeared in New Mutants Vol.2 issue 8 (2004).
- She has appeared in 1036 issues making her one of the most active of all the Japanese Comic Book Characters.
She is recruited into the X-Men to be trained as a junior team of X-Men in New X-Men, vol. 2 #23 (2006)
