Colonel Yama was an officer of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. After the U.S. entered the war, Yama was assigned to wipe out Wake Island. He attacked the island, taking US Navy soldiers hostage and wiping out the town. He built a secret prison beneath the city to hold prisoners, including Lloyd, Jerry, and Frank Dean—brothers of policewoman Betty Dean. When Betty and Namor the Sub-Mariner learned of the situation, they invaded the island. Yama escaped in a bomber, only to encounter Namor again in Guam. Ordering his men to fire on the Atlanteans, Yama was ultimately captured by Namor, who forced him to bomb his own troops, then pushed Yama out of the plane to his death.
