Nogatmi (Earth-616)

Nogatmi was a spy for the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, operating undercover in New York City by early 1944. Taking over the identity of Chinese religious leader Ching Toy, who was said to be a fire-god with a devoted Chinatown following, Nogatmi threatened Ching Toyâs daughter Mae to keep up the ruse. He also recruited a legion of homeless drug addictsâcalled âSnowbirdsââby supplying them with cocaine, turning them into loyal arsonists. After an arsonistâs capture led Captain America and Bucky to investigate, Mae helped expose the deception. In the final battle, Nogatmi mortally wounded the real Ching Toy and fled, intending to ignite an ammunition warehouse near the Brooklyn Bridge. Cornered, he tried to escape up the bridgeâs cables but died when his burning headpiece severed his rope and he fell into the East River below. Nogatmiâs sole appearance exemplifies the intersection of crime, propaganda, and tragic villainy in Golden Age Marvel stories.
