The so-called Walking Dead were a group of Japanese spies active during World War II, led by American traitor Peter Anzel, owner of Lawmere Cemetery. In 1945, they witnessed chemist John Porter test a new biological weapon and sought to retrieve the secret formula after Porter’s death. To frighten the locals and prevent interference, Anzel and his Japanese allies dressed as corpses, searching the cemetery for Porter’s grave.

News of the "Walking Dead" stirred panic, but Captain America and Bucky began investigating, suspecting sabotage. The spies captured John’s sister Laura and forced her to reveal the tomb’s location, but in a final clash, Captain America destroyed the secret formula and unmasked Anzel and his minions, who were then turned over to the authorities. Their subsequent fate remains unknown.
