Ebirah
Ebirah (エビラ, Ebira) is a fictional kaiju character in Toho's Godzilla franchise. A colossal, mutant crustacean resembling a giant lobster, Ebirah serves as one of Godzilla's most distinctive aquatic adversaries. He first appeared as the titular monster in the 1966 Shōwa-era film Ebirah, Horror of the Deep, directed by Jun Fukuda.
Origin and Design[edit]
Ebirah's name derives from the Japanese word ebi (海老), meaning lobster, shrimp, or crayfish, combined with the common kaiju suffix -ra (ラ). The creature was mutated to enormous size by nuclear waste discharged into the waters off Letchi Island by the Red Bamboo, a fictional terrorist organization. The Red Bamboo exploited Ebirah's territorial aggression to patrol the island's surrounding waters, using a special yellow repellent liquid released from their own vessels to pass safely.
Ebirah's suit was designed with two asymmetrical claws — one large and hammer-like, the other sharper and more blade-like — to give the creature an imposing and unbalanced silhouette. The head was sculpted by Teizo Toshimitsu, and suit actor Hiroshi Sekita portrayed the creature's upper half during above-water battle sequences. The full suit was manipulated as a prop for underwater scenes.
Role in Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966)[edit]
In his debut film, Ebirah functions as both a monster-of-the-sea and an unwilling guardian for the Red Bamboo. When a group of shipwrecked young men washes ashore on Letchi Island, they discover an enslaved population of Infant Island natives and a secret Red Bamboo weapons facility producing heavy water. To stop the Red Bamboo and free the captives, the group awakens a dormant Godzilla using a makeshift lightning rod.
Godzilla and Ebirah clash in a series of battles fought primarily at sea. The two kaiju engage in an iconic rock-throwing exchange, with Ebirah catching and hurling boulders back at Godzilla using his powerful claws. Ultimately, Godzilla overpowers the crustacean by ripping off both of Ebirah's claws, forcing the maimed monster to flee into the ocean. The Infant Island natives are subsequently rescued by Mothra.
The film was released in Japan on December 17, 1966, and was later localized in the United States under the title Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster (1968).
Later Appearances[edit]
Ebirah reappeared in brief stock footage in All Monsters Attack (1969), as part of a dream sequence set on Monster Island. He returned in a much larger role in Godzilla Final Wars (2004), with a redesigned, more angular appearance. In that film, Ebirah is mind-controlled and unleashed on Tokyo Bay alongside Hedorah before Godzilla defeats both monsters.
The character has also appeared in the web series Godziban (2019–) and in IDW Publishing's comics, including Godzilla: Rulers of Earth and Godzilla: Cataclysm.
Abilities[edit]
Ebirah's primary weapons are his two massive claws, capable of gripping, crushing, and deflecting projectiles. He is a powerful swimmer and holds a clear advantage over land-based kaiju when fighting in open water. In the Godziban web series, Ebirah is depicted throwing his claws as boomerangs — a move he dubs the Special Shrimp Attack.
